Coleson’s Catch Pink Salmon®, also called Gorbusch or Humpback Salmon are the smallest, most abundant and shortest lived member of the salmon family. Pink salmon are born in many fresh water streams and rivers in Alaska and immediately migrate to the clean, cold waters of the North Pacific Ocean. Pink salmon feed mainly on krill, (tiny vegetarian shrimp) which is what gives these salmon their unique light pink coloring. After 18 months at sea, they return to their fresh water place of origin to spawn. It is upon this return journey to their birth place that the males grow a hump on their back, giving them a distinct aspect and earning them the nickname “Humpies”. With such a short life span (only two years), these salmon contain little to no Mercury making them a healthy and safe seafood choice.
